Islanders could be excused for having twice consulted the New Jersey Directory 2019/20, of which 6,000 have already reached homes and businesses on the island, because on page eight, he states that the judicial officer is now the Right Honorable Earl John Fogarty.
Mr. Fogarty, who has claimed for many years to be the real judicial officer of the island, lives in an apartment in St Helier.
The distribution of directories has been halted, according to the Guernsey branch of directory specialist Yabsta, which resumed printing of JT directories last June. Yabsta chief executive Gary Taylor called the problem a “big mistake”.
The name of Mr. Fogarty is now found above that of the current Deputy Bailiff Tim Le Cocq in the directory and declares that he is the bailiff of the island and therefore the Chief Justice and an agent of the Crown.
Mr Taylor’s full statement reads: “Customers and the media have drawn our attention to a serious error in the Jersey directory, as such we have now ceased distribution until this has been fully investigated and the next steps agreed. “
“Following a first internal investigation, we now believe that the error is the result of what we believe to be an illegal false declaration made to our staff on the contact details of the bailiff of the island and it is a matter currently under consideration by the competent authorities.
“We know that 10% – 6,000 of the 60,000 that are spread across the island – have reached households and organizations in the past few days.
“We would like to reassure Islanders that errors of this type are extremely rare given the strict and careful controls that are in place on the information provided to us. We also wish to sincerely apologize to the Jersey public for any inconvenience or confusion and, more importantly, to the Usher Sir William Bailhache, for any embarrassment this has caused him personally and as the holder of his office. We will work with his office to discuss the matter.
It is not clear whether Mr. Fogarty – or a third party – initiated the directory submission.
