Jeff Bezos is the richest person in history
Jeff Bezos overtook Bill Gates as the richest person in the world at the end of last year. Now he has won another title over the founder of Microsoft: the richest person in history.
As of Monday night, Bezos’ net worth reached $ 104.2 billion on Forbes’ list of global billionaires, and its value on Bloomberg Billionaires Index was $ 105 billion. The only person who came close to that amount was Gates, who had a net worth of $ 100 billion in April 1999.
Bezos’ increased wealth comes mainly from the 78.9 million Amazon shares he owns. The online retailer’s stock increased by almost seven percent during the first week of trading of 2018, and its market value increased 57 percent in the past 12 months.
The ever-increasing stock prices come after a dominant holiday period. Amazon captured 89 percent of spending at online retailers in the five weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas (Walmart was far behind with a market share of 4.4 percent).
Bezos officially pass Gates on billionaire lists in October, when his net worth hit $ 93.8 billion (though he also had briefly held the title in July). His fortune crossed $ 100 billion for the first time on November 24 (Black Friday).
If Gates had kept his $ 100 billion in 1999, his net worth would be around $ 148 billion today. But the founder of Microsoft and his wife have spent the past 19 years donating their fortunes through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. According to public finance reports, since 1996 the Gates have donated nearly 700 million Microsoft shares $ 61.8 billion, as well as $ 2.9 billion in assets. Their pet causes include climate change and Alzheimer’s research.
While Bezos has expressed interest in philanthropy, he has not yet started to give his vast fortune. So, for now, he will continue to get rich from Amazon, with the Washington Post and the space company Blue Origin.
Amazon and the Gates Foundation did not respond to requests for comment from observers.
